The Youth Camp of the German Wind Band Youth (GWBY) can be understood as a tradition already. I 2010 it will take place the fifth time already. Regularly engaged youths from all parts of Germany meet to exchange about issues of youth work in music clubs, to commonly work on professional topics of youth work and to learn new methods and techniques. The exchange with professionals of youth work and with politicians is sought conciously. Of course there’s always music, fun and spending free time commonly won’t miss out. The youths experience wonderful days which they will remember forver and which will give them many new impressions and will help them improve their own work at home.
The first Youth Camp took place in 1989 as an exchange market of member federations of GWBY. It was part of the first German music festival in Trier. In 1995 the “meeting of multipliers exchange of experiences and getting to know enhanced methods of youth work in music groups” as part of the second German music festival in Münster took place. 250 youths from all over Germany met for a big tent camp in the middle of the city. Workshops, talks, music and much more where part of the program.
In 2001 Friedrichshafen city of the third German music festival was the place to be for 250 young persons again. The “Youth Camp International” accomodated not only German youths but also young people from abroad. In 2007 the Youth Camp was part of the fourth German music festival in Würzburg. The youths created the festival paper for the German music festival (10.000 copies!), discussed with German politician Gitta Connemann, MP about the right lobby for music bands, took part in more than

20 seminars, workshops and talks. At the closing ceremony they formed a guard of honor for German president Horst Köhler.
On a decision of the youth panel of GWBY the youth camp will from now on take place every three years. So there will be the next youth camp in 2010. This time 250 youths will meet at the Werbellinsee lake in the province of Brandenburg. Many workshops from obligatory supervision or organization of youth events to healthy alimentation and stress reduction will take place. There will be musical workshops to which include different types of music from Ska to fanfare music from Big Band to choire. Again talks about topics of youths will be held with professional partners. Different issues from a career as a professional musician to honorary work and its benefits or talks with MPs will be discussed. 20 years after the German unity this topic will also be part. Besides all this there will of course be time to get to know each other, to exchange and make new friends and contacts. In the free time there will be fun swimming in the lake, playing volleyball on the beach or making a common barbeque. A great closing ceremony with a common playing of 250 young musician will be the final highlight of the Youth Camp 2010.
A task force of member of the board of GWBY and from the member federations is already working on the planning and implementation of the camp. Many young musicians have already shown high interest in the camp. So GWBY is cheerfully looking forward to the Youth Camp 2010.
