The German-Polish Youth Office

The German-Polish Youth Office is the first binational German-Polish organisation with the entity of a international organisation. It was founded in 1991 by both governments. They contractually agreed to give the Youth Office the competence to foster the German-Polish Youth exchange.

In 1993 the Youth Office started its work. German and Polish employees in two bureaus in Potsdam and Warszaw are responsible for fostering the German-Polish youth exchange in both countries.

Both bureaus collaborate with so called central office (GWBY is such a central office). Umbrella organisations, local youth authorities, governmental departments, Euroregions andespecially active organisations of German-Polish youth exchange can be central offices. Central offices process applications of member organisations or organisations from their provinces by order and in accordance to the guidelines of the German-Polish Youth Office. Central offices are also partners of applying organisations for information and consultation.

Tasks

The main task of the Youth Office is – as it is expressed in the contract – “to foster the getting to know each other, the mutual understanding and the close co-operationof the youth of Germany and Poland in every possible way”.

What does that mean? It means to give young persons from Germany and Poland the opportunity to get closer together during collective meetings. They have the opportunity to get to know peers’ every day life in leisure time, school and profession thereby learn the language, discover history and present of the partner country. So the Youth Office will improve the understanding for each other, will help reduce prejudices and contribute to the reconciliation of Germans and Poles.

The German-Polish Youth Office is aiming the following goals:·
expand and deepen the existing youth exchange
- to enable new initiatives
- to improve the understanding for each other
- to overcome prejudices
- to initiate reconciliation
- to support the work of the youths for a free Europe

Besides the funding we also help finding a Partner. The ones who have no partner in the other country we can help to find a adequate organisation.
