DBJ 2020 – Theme with variations

Abstract of a composition for musical youth work

Lyrics: German Wind Band Youth (Youth organization of the Confederation of German Music Associations)
Music: from Pop to symphonics, from swing to polka, from ska to yodeler

Overture
Music bands in Germany, no matter in which form, are places of friendship, of fair cooperation, of common life, acceptance and mutual respect.

Irrespective of the colour of the skin, the sex, the religious affiliation, sexual or political orientation people of different age or nationality make music in common. Music bands boost diversity and integration, democracy and tolerance. They offer children and youths a chance to participate and realize their ideas.

Making music by and with children and youths is not only amusement but focused youth work with a particular specific.

The German Wind Band Youth (GWBY) is the nationwide voice of young people in music bands in Germany.
It sticks up for children and youths in politics, economics and society. The following motifs mark our current positions and give a perspective for our future work.

Boost honorary work,use competences!
Children and youths are demonstrate it: active work in a music band is no private luxury but an unestimably contribution to the positive development of our society. We need more acceptance for honorary work of young people on all social levels.

Redtapism, which avert instead of boost ideas of youth work have to be done away. We need a competent assessment of musical youth work as an artistic and non-artistic offer by public authorities. Because both parts belong together.

Youths want to call up their acquired competences completely. They want to realize them completely also beyond music bands in favor of all people. Certifications of competences for youths have to be accepted and carried on all levels of politics, ecomonics and society.

We do not want programs taht just boost talking about youth education. Youth needs credit of assurance and free spaces for creativity. In an artificially designed jungle of redtapism and fsical law orientation and engagement get lost.

International youth exchanges – here music is a great starting basis – are important experiances for young people. But they have to be designed less bureaucratic, more modern and realistic to be better promoters of youth work.

Germany needs more youths who will be future people in charge or leaders in music bands. So they will take over responsibility for themself and for others in politics, economics and society.

Musical education: doping for an integrated development!
Musical education is boosting the integrated development of children and youths demonstrably. Not only brainpower and motor function but especially key competences as ability to work in a team, endurance and self esteem are boosted broadly and effectively. All that in a climate of delight, fun and experiences.

Formal education in school and extracurricular education in a music band belong together. Only with this broad approach youths will be prepared for life in a proper way. So music bands belong into the integrated concept of all-day school. Cooperations between school and music bands are a great chance for sustainable project schedules of both sides.

Music bands are open for everybody and offer a perfect access especially for unprivileged youths. So musical education is sustainable helping to improve future chances for youths in Germany

Music bands = Culture !
Music bands and federations are important sources of culture in Germany. Our ensembles take care of our culture. That means not only caring for heritage and tradition but, especially in the field of youth bands, also innovative, creative and ambitious playing.

Important projects of non-professional music should be accepted, honored and regarded as great chances by the public for instance by cultur endowments and the media.

Amateur music ist he basis for musical high culture and professional art. Music bands are very important clients for music schools. A closer connection of both and the cooperation of the umbrella organisations and music schools is absolutely essential in terms of music playing children and youths.

Youth is future. Youth needs future!
The population development of Germany is not a horror scenario. We want to meet changes in configuration of the population, family structure and migration movement inside Germany with creativity and a sense of proportion.

We need apprenticeships and places of employment for young people in their home regions. Only young people who can find education and work close to their homes can continued play a part in the band and can improve quality of life at home.

We disapprove cuts in youth work or infrastructure for youth. Far be it from us to pit generations against each other. Our music bands show it in their everyday work: different generations can and want to live together and want to learn from each other.

Actively in child welfare!
Music bands are part of protection system for children and youths. Every responsible person in the bands, every youth leader and supporting person is aware of this responsibility and is performing it in their everyday work.

Simultaneously they do an extensive preventative work. Politics, economics and society need to appreciate this important work for society and should support music bands even more.
